Recent dramatic losses of honey bee colonies in Canada and around the world have focused public attention on the health of honey bees, whose value in Canadian crop pollination alone is estimated at $2.3 billion. Using both genomic and proteomic tools, my research is aimed at understanding honey bee immune responses to both fungal and viral pathogens in an effort to develop RNAi based gene silencing treatment systems as an alternative to antibiotics for the control of honey bee pathogens.
