The Measday lab is studying how retroviral integrases are targeted by host proteins to the genome using the Ty1 retrotransposon of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) as a model system. Ty1 is typically integrated upstream of actively transcribed tRNA genes, however the mechanism by which Ty1 is targeted is not well understood. We have made the exciting discovery that highly conserved proteins required for accurate chromosome separation are required for Ty1 transposition. The goal of the lab is to identify which proteins specifically interact with Ty1 integrase and mediate precise targeting upstream of tRNA genes. The lab is located in the UBC Wine Research Centre and we also use genomic tools to understand stress response in yeast during fermentation.
