Natural Products Biosynthesis and Structural Biology
My research group investigates the biosynthetic pathways to microbial natural product molecules. A key step in many of the projects in my laboratory is the identification of new natural product gene clusters from DNA sequencing data. Annotated biosynthetic gene clusters are then used as a starting point to (1) understand the routes used to assemble natural products, (2) explore the mechanisms of key enzymes using X-ray crystallography, and (3) engineer the production of modified natural product molecules.
