In order for damaged tissues to regenerate properly the concerted action of several cell types, and in particular of several stem/progenitor cells, is required. When such coordination fails, regeneration fails with it and the tissue degenerates. We are interested in defining the mechanisms that ensure these multiple cell types work together to restore tissue function and prevent fibrosis. These processes cannot be mimicked in vitro, and most of our research takes advantage of animal models. As this requires the study of rare cell types within highly heterogeneous populations, we extensively use flow cytometry to deconvolve such complexity as well as methods allowing the analysis of large numbers of individual cells.
