Microbial Enzymes and Pathways Involved in the Degradation of Natural and Man-Made Compounds

Our main research interest is iron-containing oxygenases from bacteria that degrade aromatic compounds and steroids. Current efforts are focused on the cholesterol-degrading enzymes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, bacterial lignin-degrading enzymes, as well as various pollutant-degrading oxygenases, particularly those from rhodococci. High-throughput methods are being used to develop inhibitors of Mtb enzymes and to identify novel lignin-degrading enzymes.
